We are excited to announce that continuing education (CEU) hours have been officially approved for the 2026 Head to Toe Conference!
Happening November 3–5, 2026, Head to Toe brings together school health, behavioral health, and other professionals for meaningful learning, connection, and collaboration.

Volunteer as a Room Host
Help sessions run smoothly at the Head to Toe Conference while enjoying 50% off general conference registration! Room Hosts welcome attendees, assist with CEU check-ins, and support two consecutive sessions. Space is limited to 20 volunteers, so apply early to secure your spot. Applications close September 15, 2026.

Please note: A $25 processing fee applies to all Purchase Order payments to help cover administrative costs.
Once your Purchase Order is reviewed and approved, we will email you a DISCOUNT CODE that will allow you to complete your Head to Toe Registration in Whova.

Access Funds
Schools who receive Title IV Part A federal funds are eligible to use those funds for the Head to Toe Conference. For information about accessing federal grant funds to pay for conference registration and expenses for the Head to Toe Conference, please contact Emily Sisk Layman at emily.sisk-layman@ped.nm.gov. Please note that we will not be able to offer refunds to those who have purchased their tickets prior to receiving approval.

Retta Ward Memorial Scholarship Reading
Retta Kay Ward, Cabinet Secretary of Health for the State of New Mexico was born May 4, 1953, in Hagerman, New Mexico, to Kenneth and Naomi Ward. From yearbook editor to homecoming queen, Retta was a natural leader with stellar intellect, graduating as valedictorian. She obtained her undergraduate degree from the University of New Mexico in Health Education and later earned her Master of Public Health degree from the University of Arizona. Retta educated thousands of middle and high school students in Albuquerque, NM, and Cave Creek, AZ, in health and science. She also managed the Arthritis Program for the Arizona Department of Health Services.
In 2011, Retta returned to New Mexico to serve as the Cabinet Secretary of Aging and Long-Term Services, launching the successful statewide healthy aging initiative called “Know Your Numbers, Change Your Numbers, Change Your Life.” In 2013 she was tapped for her dream job, Cabinet Secretary of Health, where she was able to share her passion for public health and work on improving the wellbeing of all New Mexicans. Retta was compassionate, positive and a humble leader beloved by all who knew her. She exuded warmth and an infectious passion for healthy living; known for tracking her daily steps on her Fitbit, climbing the stairs whenever possible and even lifting weights while on conference calls.
Secretary Ward was an exceptional leader, passionate about improving health for all New Mexicans. She was also passionate about making the Department of Health the best place to work in New Mexico.
Retta was also a huge fan of school health and understood the value of well-being when it comes to academic success. So, we provide one new member of the school health professional team with a scholarship in her name.

Dean Hopper Scholarship
Born in Las Cruces, New Mexico, on November 28 (Thanksgiving Day), 1963, to Eldeane and Kaye Hopper, Dean began his career of service in 1989 as a communications teacher at a vo-tech high school and later at Alameda Junior High, both in Santa Fe. Beloved by students and colleagues, Dean was often showered with warm memories and gratitude when he ran into former students.
Insightful, creative, and generous, Dean was a passionate advocate for student health programs that recognized the link between well-being and academic achievement. In keeping with that mission, he left the classroom in 1995 and joined the New Mexico Department of Health as a disease prevention specialist. He later served as a health educator and then as the HIV Education Program Coordinator for the New Mexico Public Education Department.
Dean was eventually promoted to Assistant Director of the School Health Unit and retired as Director of the Safe and Healthy Schools Bureau in March 2020, ending a 20-year career in the same building, with the same bureau. His compassion extended to everyone around him, and he often championed the needs of the most vulnerable while pushing for progressive change.
We offer this scholarship to a new addition to the school health professional world eager to further pursue that link between well-being and academic success. More info coming soon
